Unit costs for substance misuse
The NTA is working with the Department of Health, Home Office and the Treasury to further our understanding of the costs of substance misuse treatment in England. The aim is to provide local treatment systems with better information on the relationship between cost and effectiveness.
The drug treatment system has been able to expand and improve over the past six years in response to significant additional investment. Future expansion and improvement will need to be driven by better use of existing resources or growth in local investment, rather than further increases in central government investment through the pooled treatment budget.
2007/08 data validation exercise: Guidance and supporting documents
Since the unit cost report (version 3) was published via DAMS and NDTMS.net there have been a small number of requests from providers to amend their data. The NTA wishes to produce a unit cost report for 07/08 which will become a “frozen” data set. This will be known as version 4.
In order to achieve this, the NTA would like to offer providers a final opportunity to check (and if appropriate) refresh their unit cost data and also offer those who missed the deadline in the first instance the opportunity to submit unit cost data. This will be the final opportunity to refresh 07/08 unit cost data.
The NTA is pleased to confirm that the 2007/08 unit costs validation exercise has received formal Gateway (No.11653) approval from the Department of Health.

A unit costs validation proforma will need to be completed and signed off by Partnerships and the NTA if providers wish to make any changes to their unit cost data. (April 2009)
